Finding work onboard luxury and superyachts is very competitive. If you are new to the industry and don’t have any connections to get you placed don’t fret, there are a few things you can do that will boost your application, and a few things that are mandatory.
The level of training and experience you need is dependant on what position you’re applying for.
Positions To Get You Started
If you’re brand new to the industry, the general positions taken up by newbies onboard are deckhands, stewards and chefs (whether crew or sous). If you have an engineering degree or equivalent qualification you might also qualify as a junior engineer or deck engineer on board.
Mandatory Requirements & Certificates For Working On A Luxury Yacht
If you plan to work as crew on a superyacht or luxury yacht there are two mandatory certificates needed to get work on board:
A mandatory qualification required by all crew hoping to work on a commercial or charter yacht. STCW 2010 is the most up-to-date course – (Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers). The STCW 2010 is a compulsory requirement for any seafarer in order to be eligible for employment at sea. Course modules include Marine Fire Fighting, Sea Survival, Elementary First Aid, Personal Safety, Social Responsibilities and Competence in Security Awareness.
Having this certification will certainly improve your chances of getting work on board a luxury yacht.
is a medical examination set by the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) to assess whether individuals are fit to work on a seagoing vessel and perform duties at sea. You can typically obtain the certificate from MCA Approved Doctor (AD) and this certificate is also mandatory before you’re allowed to complete your STCW course.
