So you finished school (finally) but you’re not ready to plunge into the land of job hunting, nor ready to commit to studies just yet? There could be another option that not only keeps you busy, but let’s you travel AND earn money while doing it. What is this dream occupation you might ask? Well, its working on luxury yachts of course! Now working on a luxury yacht is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Yes, you get to travel to some amazing destinations and rub shoulders with the rich and famous – but you’re going to be working really, really hard whilst doing so – and that is IF you manage to make the cut to crew.
First Steps – Basic Training
If this still sounds like something you might want to do, there are some basics you need to know. Unfortunately there is some basic training you will need if you’re serious about landing a job on a luxury yacht. The industry is super competitive, and those that don’t have the basic training, simply are looked over. So making sure you’ve got the basic training is crucial! But don’t worry, you don’t have to take a year off to study – the basic training can be done in only 10 days.
Certain credentials are now mandatory for new crew looking for superyacht jobs. Any person working on boats must hold an up-to-date seafarer medical certificate. In addition, all crew members must have completed the eleven-day basic safety training course – STCW 2010.
Step Two – Create a Yachting Crew CV
You’re just out of school, and you’re probably thinking – how much can I actually put in my CV? Should I really still create one? Yes!
A yacht crew CV is nothing like ones “normal” CV. Yacht crew recruitment agencies, and Captains are looking for very specific qualities – and if your CV is not in the right format, again, your application will be thrown out. But don’t stress – we’re here to help you prepare for not only creating that perfect yacht CV, but also ideas for what other skills & side-jobs could help fill that CV of yours.
Step Three – Landing a Yacht Job
We’ve mentioned how competitive the industry is. Making sure that you have your basic training, and your yacht CV covered is a great start. The hard part is mixing with the right people and being in the right location. Signing with the right yacht crew recruitment agency will also help a ton!
