The COVID-19 virus spreading across the globe has a third of the world’s continents currently in lockdown. While this is not ideal, and can be frustrating for some, you could use this time for some personal learning and potentially even take online courses.
While sadly, not all online courses are accepted by MCA enforced vessels, there are some online yacht crew courses that you are able to take and benefit from.
Online training is a great way to up-skill and continue your professional development within the industry. There is an array of ‘soft’ skills which all crew would benefit from learning, such as leadership, communication and conflict-management, which could be completed online.
Online yacht crew courses are also a great method for follow-up training if you’ve done your practical, physical course with an accredited training provider.
These are some of the courses and places you can look at polishing your skills while in lockdown.
Virtual Training Center is fully MCA compliant and approved and offers a variety of courses geared mostly towards safety and security on vessels. The STCW:2010 Crowd Management & Passenger Safety is always a great course to have, and VTC even offers a Fully Online MCA Approved Ship Security Officer Course amongst a few others.
The courses incorporate interactive learning confirmation questionnaires, video, high-quality note downloads and formal assessments for official certifications.
Tradewinds Engineering provides a range of refrigeration-focussed online training courses, to help marine engineers understand how these systems work and also how to troubleshoot and commission them. Its training courses cover various topics, from ‘Refrigeration Masterclass’ and ‘Fundamentals of Marine Refrigeration’, to ‘Ventilation and Air Balancing’ and ‘Brazing Copper Pipework to British Standards’. Some of their courses have free introductions and some are discounted due to Corona Virus at present.
The Yacht Purser specialises in training for aspiring pursers who wish to progress in a purser role as well as interior managers. Topics of the course include information about the purser role itself, regulation, port clearance, payroll, APA accounting, destination management inclusive of itineraries and budgeting.
If you’re completely new to the industry, you could also opt to download our full yacht crew handbook which will help you prepare for your career and what you need to know before you start on this quest.
