The COVID-19 pandemic has had far reaching effects on the entire globe – mostly in the financial sense.
With the lockdown on travel, group events and even governmental enforcement of social distancing and quarantine, the hospitality industry has come to a grinding halt. Most yacht crew are full time staff, and therefore dependent on getting hired for yacht jobs to earn their living. When in between charters, during rotation or during quieter seasons, they also typically get part-time jobs such as waitering or bartending. And sadly, in both those cases, their part-time jobs have now also been affected.
How can you Earn a Living in Lockdown?
There are ways that you can earn money even if you’re stuck inside your apartment. Tap into your other skill sets, and find online remote job boards. There are a number of them globally, and they offer jobs in almost anything you can think of. Some offer full-time, but also part-time roles. Some might also be at odd hours, so if you’re not too fussy, this is where you can pick up a paying job while you’re landlocked!
Some of our suggestions include:
-
Copywriting /Editing – Okay, you need to have some good grammar skills for this one, but there is always a demand for people that can write, and or edit someone else’s writing. Typically payment is either per completed piece (article) or per written word.
-
Photo Editing – Okay, here you might also need some additional skills. Many yachties already run their own personal blogs and take photos as a hobby so have learned some basic photo manipulation skills along the way.
-
Virtual assistant – Yachties have to be incredibly organised by their nature, so applying as a virtual assistant should be easy. Virtual assistants job descriptions typically range from anything from answering calls to organising important emails, replying to emails, managing appointments to managing invoices and more.
-
Customer Support – Jobs can range from basic email answering and working through a ticket list, to learning about a new field and being the first line of answering customer queries. As most yachties have developed a thick skin and are uber polite in the most difficult instances, this would also be a job quite well suited – and you can usually also pick the timezone you’d like to work in.
Don’t despair or give up though! You can find something to tie your income over till this pandemic passes.
