There are many paths to pursue in terms of a career on luxury yachts. One of the most popular positions is to apply for an entry level job as a steward or stewardess. Many people aim for this as the role is also quite varied for example taking up the role of host, housekeeper and manager amongst other tasks.
The role covers everything from serving and entertaining guests to laundry and full housekeeping duties, and even accounting responsibilities. Which means there are so many interweaving disciplines, skills and past experience (like waitressing or bartending for example) one can have that would help you succeed in this role – even for first-timers.
Required Training
Every crew member that works on a luxury yacht must have completed two things that are mandatory.
These are:
This is the basic requirement for getting work on a luxury yacht. But there are so many additional courses you can do, that will certainly set you ahead of the other applicants.
If you’re considering applying for a role as steward/ess you might consider enrolling straight for the GUEST Program. It also includes the basic, mandatory training.
GUEST is actually an acronym standing for: ‘Guidelines for Unified Excellence in Service Training’. It offers stewards and stewardesses a clear training route, leading to an industry recognised Certificate of Competency (CoC) within a carefully designed career path for interior crew.
Get Onboard is partnered with an internationally IYT certified training school which offers an Interior Crew Training Course of 3 weeks. It consists of the STCW 2010, the 5 day Steward/ Stewardess course and a Basic Seamanship Course.
